Entertainment Options in the Big Apple

New York is arguably the theater capital of the world and visitors can watch a huge variety of shows here. Blockbuster musicals, classics, comedy, opera, ballet and cutting-edge contemporary drama can all be found in New York’s theaters, both on and off-Broadway. Many notable venues can be found in the theater district around Broadway.

The city also has a thriving live music scene. The famous Carnegie Hall hosts large concerts by established performers. Free opera and classical musical concerts are held in New York’s parks during the summer months, while many bars and nightclubs feature live music of all genres. A famous venue is the B. B. Madison Square Gardens in Chelsea is one of the most popular venues in the city and a favorite with many artists, so don’t be surprised to find one of your favorite bands or singers performing there during your visit.

New York is a shopper’s paradise with famous department stores, fashionable boutiques, interesting specialist stores and bustling markets selling almost everything imaginable. Famous department stores include Bloomingdale’s, Tiffany and Co. jewelers, Macy’s and Sak’s of Fifth Avenue.

Fifth Avenue is traditionally the boutique of high roller strip, and even if you can’t afford anything here, it feels good just to stroll down its pavements and window shop – it certainly gives you a glimpse into the world of the rich and famous. It stretches for miles so ensure you have sensible shoes on. At the other end of the scale is Canal Street, where you can pick up all the rip-offs.

Many exclusive boutiques selling high fashion goods can be found in Madison Avenue, while the SoHo district is a good place to look for art, jewelry and clothing. Other popular shopping areas include Elizabeth street and the Avenue of the Americas.
